Vorig jaar was het 10 jaar geleden dat Carl Sagan overleed. Over de hele wereld werd er toen een blog-a-thon gehouden met bijdragen over Sagan. Ik heb toen ook meegedaan. Dit jaar organiseert men opnieuw zo'n blog-a-thon. Naar mijn smaak ietwat overdreven (I'm a sucker for round numbers), maar vooruit.

Dit jaar een aantal citaten van Carl Sagan

Over de waarde van fundamenteel onderzoek:

Over misteries, schoonheid en romantiek

Over het bestaan van God
In many cultures it is customary to answer that God created the universe out of nothing. But this is mere temporizing. If we wish courageously to pursue the question, we must, of course ask next where God comes from. And if we decide this to be unanswerable, why not save a step and decide that the origin of the universe is an unanswerable question? Or, if we say that God has always existed, why not save a step and conclude that the universe has always existed? Cosmos

En als dat altijd al heeft bestaan is er ook nooit "NIETS" geweest ...zoals de oude grieken al stelden

Ik zit sinds een week de nieuwe DVD-serie Cosmos te kijken. Die is uit sinds 30 oktober. Geweldig!

Artikelen over wetenschappelijke onderwerpen

Waarom een weblog over wetenschap?

Net als de rest van het leven blijft dit een experiment. Volgens mij heeft men in het algemeen geen idee wat een wetenschapper de hele dag doet en wat hem bezig houdt. Dit leek mij een mogelijkheid om daar wat aan te doen. Mijn doel is elke werkdag een schrijfsel te produceren over wetenschap en het wetenschappelijke bedrijf (want het is uiteindelijk ook een bedrijf). Soms zullen dit commentaren of zijn op artikelen die in wetenschappelijke tijdschriften verschijnen, dan weer zullen het persoonlijke verhalen of reflecties zijn al-dan-niet naar aanleiding van wetenschappelijke artikelen. Alles afhankelijk van de waan of rust van de dag. In mijn dromen zijn wetenschappers de tovenaars van deze tijd. Tovenaars die in staat zijn om problemen op te lossen, danwel voort te brengen, afhankelijk of het goede of slechte tovenaars zijn. In de praktijk valt dat vaak tegen en komen bevlogen ideeen krakend tot stilstand door de dagelijkse beslommeringen. Het oorspronkelijke doel was de stukjes zo kort te houden dat het bij wijze van spreken 10 tellen zou duren om er 1 te lezen. Vandaar Tomaso's tien tellen. Hier heb ik hopeloos gefaald. De meeste stukjes zijn langer, maar naar mijn idee nog steeds redelijk overzichtelijk.
