Nice and Brighton
A Commuter's Journal

This cold and windy afternoon, at 14.30, the Nice Carnival has begun. It runs until March 2.

This year, the 104th edition of Nice's Carnival, the theme is "King of Bats, Cats and Rats", coinciding with the Chinese year of the Rat.

The Bataille des Fleurs is an integral part of the Carnival, dating from 1876 with the simple exchange of flowers from the rich visitors to the city.

And it are the rich visitors today for whom the city of Nice seems to organize this carnival, because the route of the 20 flower covered floats, along the Promenade des Anglais, from the Meridien Hotel to the Opera House, is fenced off, with ugly blue metal fences.

In this great peoples' republic of France, people have to pay € 10,- for general admission to the Promenade des Anglais, and € 15,- extra for a seat. A bloody shame.

The police make sure that no-one enters the Carnival zone without a ticket.

One of the many places you can buy tickets. The people who buy them are usually tourists. Most Niçoise people refuse to pay for a Carnival that, dating back to 1294, always has been a feast for the people.

Standing along the Promenade des Anglais. To be able to do so, you have to pay € 10,-.

This is all you're able to see when you don't pay, or can't.

Niçoise people, standing on bollards, trying to watch the parade.
While the Carnival Parade is proceeding for paying spectators, the rest of Nice remains the same as ever. Sunday, March 2, there will be an incineration parade and fireworks, which will be for free. That might attract the locals.

Hee die Mo! :-))
Volgens mij is de plaatselijke "vvv" hier een tikkeltje te ver gegaan. Deze stad heeft 250 jaar ervaring met toerisme, maar betalen om een carnavalsoptocht te zien valt niet in goede aarde bij de bevolking.
