Cagnes sur Mer is just 13 kilometers from Nice, so we took the bus and got out at Cros de Cagnes. On our way to the old town on the top of a hill, the medieval quarter called Haut de Cagnes, we passed this open sewer, that seemed to be a river.

We walked all the way uphill, but you can take the free shuttle from the bus station in Cagnes sur Mer. It goes every 15 minutes.
We're not quite there yet. Maybe we should have taken that bus?

There they are, the church and the castle!
The castle is also a museum.
With a bit of fantasy you can see the knights on their horses.

There are several restaurants in the castle square, but we decide for Le Jimmy's, because the waitresses look nicer here.
Cagnes sur Mer is famous for its artists. There is a Renoir domain and museum, a Grimaldi castle and museum, a House of Artists, etc. Ziem, Derain, Cezanne, Renoir, and Modigliani, to mention a few, helped Cagnes sur Mer build its artistic reputation.

I used to live here in Nice with my girl friend, a Dutch baroness, off and on, from 1976 to 1984. This photo was taken in 1986. Visiting regularly throughout the years, I moved back to Nice in 2007.

Prince Valerian Obolensky (1951) is living in Amsterdam, Paris, and Nice. He is the author of the book Russians in Exile - The History Of A Diaspora. After the cold war Prince Valerian Obolensky was invited by Anatoli Sobchak, mayor of St. Petersburg and Russian candidate of presidency, to come to his beautiful city. Sobchak offered the Prince, on behalf of the Russian Republic, his most sincere excuses for everything the Russian nation had done to the Russian nobility since 1917.
