Nog drie maanden te gaan en dan is het eerste decennium van deze eeuw, dit millennium, voorbij. Dus worden er weer lijstjes gemaakt.
Van Oor kwam het verzoek om een lijstje met wat ik de beste tien platen van de afgelopen tien jaar vond, (in te leveren voor 1 oktober) maar ook Pitchfork kon niet wachten tot 31 december en is dezer dagen bezig de beste 200 platen die verschenen sinds 1 januari 2000 op een rijtje te zetten. Vrijdag weten we wat volgens hen de beste 20 zijn.
Leuk maar lastig een lijstje samenstellen uit de afgelopen tien jaar. De beste platen aller tijden lijkt me eenvoudiger. Ik heb er ook niet zo bij stil gestaan dat het dit jaar weer van ons journalisten gevraagd werd. Dat heeft er alles mee te maken dat eind 1999 geen verzoek om een dergelijk lijstje kwam. Ik betreurde dat. Wel moest er een 'aller tijden' lijstje komen, zoals dat iedere paar jaar wel door iets of iemand gevraagd wordt.
Ik kan me nog goed herinneren dat eind 1979 Muziekkrant Oor aan journalisten en programmamakers vroeg naar hun lijstjes met beste albums van de jaren zeventig. Ik was 16 en voor mij waren de meeste platen die genoemd werden volkomen nieuw. Stevie Wonder stond op 1, die kende ik natuurlijk, maar van Derek And The Dominos kende ik alleen het nummer Layla en dat was omdat in het onvolprezen radioprogramma van de KRO Raufasher, Hans Wynants het iedere week draaide. (gek trouwens voor een nummer dat bijna tien jaar oud was). Bowie? Okay, maar Little Feat kende ik niet.
Begin 1980 verscheen er op initiatief van Boudewijn Büch zelfs een boek waarin keuzes werden toegelicht en mooie artikelen uit de jaren zeventig werden gebundeld. Dit Songs In The Key Of Life is jarenlang een van mijn lievelings popboeken geweest. 2 jaar geleden heb ik het uitgeleend aan een bevriend journalist, en nog niet teruggekregen (hoe lang nog, L?).
Vanaf 1980 besloot ik zelf ook ieder jaar een lijstje te maken en verheugde me ieder jaar meer op een totaallijst van de jaren tachtig. Die verscheen ook, maar er kwam helaas geen boek. Jammer was ook dat The Smiths er te weinig en te laag in stonden, als ik het wel heb.
Maar goed, de jaren negentig zijn nooit zo geboekstaafd en nu de jaren nul gelukkig weer wel.
Was het een goed decennium? Ja, maar niet echt veel albums die er uitsprongen zoals in de jaren negentig Ok Computer of Nevermind. Veel van mijn favoriete artiesten (Belle And Sebastian, Radiohead, Tom Waits en Costello) brachten goede tot geweldige platen uit, maar allemaal net wat minder dan in de decennia ervoor.
Nieuwlichters waren er gelukkig ook, maar echt een nieuw geluid heb ik ook weer niet gehoord.
Hoe blij ik ook was met The Strokes en The White Stripes, een top tien zat er niet voor hen in.
Ze bevinden zich met Kid A en Dear Catastrophe Waitress in goed gezelschap, zeg maar.
Hiphop? Twee albums van Outkast dongen mee. Maar op allebei staat me net iets te veel ongein.
Dance? Niet heel goed bijgehouden maar LCD Soundsystem en Hot Chip heb ik echt overwogen. Zij haalden het net niet.
Antony & The Johnsons en Rufus Wainwright vielen op het laatste moment af net als een andere favoriet We Love Life van Pulp.
Dubstep? Prachtig die Burial platen, maar dan toch liever Outkast of Rufus Wainwright.
Eigenlijk bleek het helemaal zo moeilijk niet. De volgende tien kwamen vrij sne in me op, en drie weken later is daar weinig aan veranderd.

God ja, lekker! Ben al sinds jaar en dag ernstig verslaafd aan de
I-tunes lijstjes-maak-mogelijkheid. Overigens, heerlijke lijst
hierboven! Spinvis en Johan..zo mooi. En verrassend! Andrew Bird.
Nog een tip met stip voor je eventuele vervolg-eindejaarslijstje
: This Empty Northern Hemisphere van Gregory Alan Isakov. Een
heus juweel. Echt.

het niet. Hot Chip haalde de shortlist niet eens. Deze lijst heb

Wat een braaf lijstje, zeg. Is dat nu de complete oogst van 10
jaar? Dan gaat het slecht met de popmuziek. Sowiso opvallend dat
er geen echt nieuwe stromingen of nieuwe belangrijke platen zijn.

voorkeuren blijken daar uit. Je blog inspireert mij om ook een
lijstje te maken. Ik ben geen echte kenner, wel een

zullen we begin volgend jaar - dan is het toch komkommertijd -
dan gewoon gezellig, saampies met z'n allen de jaren negentig
doen? (vooral ook omdat ik bij het samenstellen van *dit* lijstje
tot de conclusie kwam dat de meeste van mijn favoriete albums -
definitely maybe, crooked rain, 69lovesongs, matthew sweet -
namelijk uit de jaren negentig waren)

Johan is toch op afstand de meest geeuwverwekkende band van de
jaren NUL. Blijkbaar is het in het journaille not done om kritiek
te hebben op dat bandje. Ik heb hun saaie getokkel nooit
begrepen. Ook het quasi-intellectuele VPRO Gids-gepriegel van
Spinvis heb ik nooit gesnapt.
Voor de rest een okay lijstje, met een verrassend commerciële keus gevallen op Timberlake. Wat me opvalt is het chronisch gebrek aan vrouwen in deze lijstjes... How come?

lees ik eerst een stuk over stockhausen en merzbow lees ik daarna
dit top tientje... tja.
Het zal wel aan mij liggen maar deze top tien staat vol met albums die nogal in de catogorie vallen, en ik quote de quote uit je iegen artikel: " 'If noise means uncomfortable sound, then most pop music is noise to me.'
Wellicht had je het antwoord wat het boek van Stubbs je schuldig bleef, zelf al kunnen geven: Journalisten in de main stream media (lees gedrukte pers en tv) maken lijstjes met tijdelijke muzakjes en slappe aftreksels van avant gardistische stromingen.
Als the LCD soundsystem het beste is wat Dance de afgelopen jaren heeft voortgebracht is t een treurige wereld. Gelukkig weet een hele generatie van internettende muziek liefhebbers wel beter.
Zet je last.fm radio is aan en typ merzbow in de search... wellicht vind je nog eens wat nieuws!

@ Mark Dijkhuis: Wie is Arnold Scheepmaker? Die ken ik niet. En
hoe kan een lijst nou wel of niet kloppen? Op welke manier is
mijn lijst achterhaald? Dit is gewoon mijn smaak, geheel
subjectief natuurlijk. Kan toch ook niet anders? En op een
gegeven moment wordt het natuurlijk nogal een nerdy tijdbedrijf,
ik zal dat nooit ontkennen. Het heeft iets pathetisch, maar ook
iets vermakelijks. Zoals PvC terecht opmerkt erg High Fidelity,
kan me dan ook zeer herkennen in dat boek. Maar ik beleef er nou
eenmaal veel plezier aan en met mij vele anderen!

@ Sjakie: Wel, dat was een grapje natuurlijk. Om aan te geven dat
zo'n lijst natuurlijk nooit helemaal definitief kan zijn, zelfs
niet met een bescheiden criterium als de eigen smaak. Ik denk dat
m'n top vijf wel aardig vast staat, maar de rest blijft toch
altijd in zekere mate een momentopname. Omdat ik deze top honderd
al gemaakt had dacht ik 'ik neem hem gewoon even over'. Dat zou
je onbescheiden kunnen noemen. Vandaar dat ik dat relativerende
grapje ('het is maar een lijstje') erboven wilde zetten. Want
meer dan dat is het natuurlijk ook niet; onderhoudend hobby-isme.

Dit soort lijstjes blijven natuurlijk frustrerend. Zo zie ik nu
dat ik potverdorie Deerhunter helemaal over het hoofd heb gezien.
Stom! Hun 'Microcastle' mag op 89 ipv Sufan's 'Michigan'. Sufjan
staat toch al met nog twee andere album in mijn lijst. Zo zie je
maar, dat zo'n lijst nooit helemaal vast kan staan. Er is ook
zóveel mooie muziek.

noemt; briljante band die helaas nooit echt bekend is geworden!
Ook het solowerk van Archer Prewitt en Sam Prekop is zeker de

@ Kaaasgaaf. Wat Sjakie zegt. En Arnold, ja, die kennen we
natuurlijk van zijn vermakelijke bijdragen op het
Subjectivisten-forum, dat enkele jaren geleden zeer in trek was
bij popnerds zoals wij. Arnold besloot het jaar steevast met een
Top 100 of erger. Daar werd men bang van in die tijd. Maar ach,
iedere tijd verdient zijn eigen Arnold. Hup Kaaasgaaf, kom op met
die definitieve definitieve lijst. ;-) Ik geniet iedere dag van
deze lijstjes. Kan zelf gewoon nog niet tot een keuze komen.

Grappig al die lijstjes, maar wat mij het meeste bij zal blijven
van de jaren '0 is dat mijn oude helden zo vlammend toesloegen.
Sommigen zo hevig, dat zij het zicht op de nieuwe generatie een
beetje ontnamen. Zeker, ik heb de bladen/kranten gevolgd en veel
cd's van nieuwe bandjes de revue laten passeren, maar.....weinig
beklijft. Misschien heb ik de in de jaren '0 wel ontdekt dat ik
mijn 'absolute leeftijd" in de muziek bereikt heb. Benauwend?
Welnee...
Want hoeveel bandjes in hun garage's en andere holen deep down de VS en UK zich ook in het zweet hebben gewerkt om pareltjes te leveren, ik schuif ze zo aan de kant voor "Cuckooland" van Robert Wyatt. Ook een tip voor hen die zweren bij Anthony. Niet dat deze mij onberoerd laat, maar duik eens in de geschiedenis van Wyatt en je zult versteld staan van zijn stem, muziek en attitude. Echt!
En al kwam "Shine" van Joni Mitchell er in de recensies wat bekaaid van af, ik ben er een jaar zoet mee geweest. Wat een doorrookte verademing om na de hypergestylde "Music" van Madonna jezelf in "Night of the Iguana", "Shine "en vooral "If" te kunnen onderdompelen.
Kate Bush oversteeg met Aerial niet haar eerdere meesterwerken, maar liet wel weer even horen hoeveel mensen schatplichtig aan haar talent zijn. "Somewhere in Between" komt zondermeer in de top tien van beste liedjes van de jaren '0. Tijdloos hoe zij vorm en inhoud kan laten samensmelten.
PJ Harvey is wat jonger maar blijft een verhaal apart. Ze mag met gerust hart onder Bush en Mitchell staan. "Uuh hu her!!!"
Leuk om McCartney in veel lijstje te zien terugkomen met "Songs and Creations in the Backyard". Volkomen terecht . Met Becks' "Sea Change" op korte afstand in de race om meest melancholieke plaat.
And hats off for Neill Godrich.
Bij deze nog een pleidooi voor een andere oude rot die een magisch elixer ontdekte (in de vorm van Alison Krauss): Robert Plant. "Raising Sand" is niet alleen een brilliant idee om je carriere van fris bloed te voorzien: de muzikale uitwerking van dit idee is heavy hemels. Zouden meer oude rotten moeten doen. Zoniet Leonard Cohen: hij kwam terug, zag en overwon met eenvoud, warmte, existentiele twijfel en ongehoord charisma . "Live in London"is een goede troost voor wie zijn concerten gemist heeft.
Ook op Nederlands gebied buig ik meer voor oude rotten dan voor Johan: The Nits schudde met "Les Nuits" net zo veel mooie liedjes als de Excelsior- held uit hun mouw, maar met nog meer diepte, variatie en inhoud gebracht. En wat een drummer!
Voor ik mijn hoogtepunt bereik toch nog wat jonge helden: Think of One's "Marrakesh Emballage Ensemble" met hun opwindend Vlaams antwoord op hoe te integreren met Marrokanen en Nitin Sawhney's "Philtre" als gloeiend smeltpunt van jazz, r&beats,drum& bass& soul&rock, Indiaase en Spaanse muziek en veel meer. Rufus Wainwright's " Poses" behoeft geen krans.
Maar mijn nummero Uno van de jaren '0 is zonder twijfel "Snow Borne Sorrow" van Nine Horses.
Ik zag de hierboven veelgenoemde Spinvis bij het laatste concert van David Sylvian, luister nu eens goed waar hij zijn mosterd vandaan heeft! En wat voor een mosterd...

Zag gisteren het Britse blad Uncut: Twee platen van het grote
talent Bob Dylan in hun top tien over de jaren nul, waarmee deze
man zich nu al tot één van de toonaangevende artiesten van de
21ste eeuw lijkt te onpoppen. Wij gaan nog veel van hem
horen...
Hier zie ik de naam in geen enkel lijstje opduiken, missen wij in Nederland de boot?
Of toont dit aan hoe de AOW-grens voor muziekjournalisten aan de overzijde van de Noordze tot volstrekt onverantwoorde leeftijd is opgehoogd?

Zero's , de man heeft maat 2 reguliere albums gemaakt in deze
decade . Mooi album vol croonerblues , stond nr 2 in mijn
jaarlijst van 2006 maar haalde net mijn top 10 van de Zero''s

laat die ouwe lullen lekker doorschrijven, hier en aan de andere kant van de Noordzee.
Zoals ikzelf hierboven al beschreef, ben ik de afgelopen 10 jaar meer onder de indruk geweest van wat de oude garde presteerde dan wat er aan nieuwe bandjes verscheen. Misschien speelt ook het simpele feit mee dat het toch bijzonderder is als iemand als Dylan, na zovele jaren varen door het grillige Popland, nog steeds relevant kan klinken.
Zo leverde MGTM een mooi debuut af, maar vergelijk dat eens met "Exiter' van Depeche Mode. Ik ben dan toch meer onder de indruk dat een band van vroeg in de 80ties nog steeds zo fris en fascinerend kan klinken.Je voelt enerzijds de grillige geschiedenis in hun nummers doorklinken, maar ook maken ze heel voelbaar hoe ze in het "nu" staan, ondanks/dankzij die geschiedenis. Zoals ik ook mijn eigen geschiedenis meeneem als ik naar hun muziek luister. En dat beinvloed mijn perceptie van het "nu".
Zo stond ik bij Leonard Cohen in het Westerpark naast mensen die mijn opa en oma hadden kunnen zijn, en toch zijn we allebei ontroerd omdat een deel van onze gezamelijke geschiedenis zo tastbaar aanwezig is. En als kunst de autobiografie van de mensheid is, dan lees ik graag nog, zolang het kan, wat hoofdstukjes waar de natuurlijke dood bijna een punt achter dreigt te zetten.

Bij Gijsberts item over ouder worden in de popmuziek schreef ik het volgende:
Tussen je 16e en 26e heeft popmuziek de meeste impact, logisch dus dat platen die in die jaren verschijnen voor de luisteraar in die leeftijdsgroep eeuwigheidswaarde verkrijgen. Het is dan ook niet aan veertigplussers om te bepalen welke platen van dit moment recht gaan krijgen op die eeuwigheidswaarde.
Binnenkort ga ik met mijn dochter van 15 naar de Arctic Monkeys, voor haar één van de eerste grote concertbelevingen. Allebei vinden we Whatever people say I am, that´s what I´m not de beste plaat, en reken maar dat ik samen met haar over twintig jaar weer vooraan sta als ze die integraal komen spelen.
ik ben ban '64, de jaren tachtig waren dus mijn jaren qua muziek. In die tijd had je van die mensen die de jaren zestig bewust hadden meegemaakt en beweerden dat alles wat nadien was verschenen nog niet in de schaduw kon staan van Beatles, Stones en Dylan. Ik kon me daar altijd vreselijk aan ergeren, en daarom vind ik het behoorlijk aanmatigend richting de huidige jongeren (muziekliefhebbers en muzikanten) om ondanks al hun inspanningen toch gewoon Dylan, de man die boven alle kritiek verheven lijkt, als meest relevante artiest van deze tijd te beschouwen. Je kunt van een huidige 15-20jarige niet verwachten dat-ie de laatste Dylan als een meesterwerk beschouwd, of dat-ie Exiter mooier moet vinden dan MGTM, en objectief gezien vraag ik me af of dat ook echt zo is.
Persoonlijk vind ik Wilco de meest consistente band van de jaren '00, hun platen wisten me bovendien telkens te ontroeren, maar volgens mij zegt dat vooral wat over mij en mijn leeftijd. Ik zag Dylan drie jaar geleden in de HMH en vond 't een vreselijk concert. Het was alsof ze 15 keer hetzelfde liedje speelden, steeds weer die obligate walsjes zonder enig muzikaal vuurwerk, Dylan die onverstaanbaar en ongeinspireerd zijn teksten kraaide. Ik was dan ook verbijsterd over de recensies nadien, niemand leek hardop te durven zeggen dat 't niet goed was, want ja, het is toch saint Bob tenslotte, en zijn toorn mocht eens over ons neerdalen...
Muziek, 't is en blijft een kwestie van smaak, zelfs in het geval van Dylan. Overigens vind ik Subterranean Homesick Blues best een leuk liedje en draai ik blonde on blonde ook wel eens, gewoon, voor m'n plezier...:-)

Om eerlijk te zijn Marcel, ben ik ook geen diehard Dylan fan. Zag hem ooit in Ahoy, maar de ster van de van die avond was de man achter de geluidsknoppen. Nog nooit zo'n goed geluid bij een concert gehoord. Ook wat waard!
Maar even over het woord aanmatigend in je artikel. Zelf dank nog steeds een aantal vrienden op mijn blote knieen die mij in "mijn" jaren tachtig inwijdden in de muziek van voor die tijd. Die me lieten horen waar b.v. Sister Ray dat ik kende van Joy Division vandaan kwam, Dear Prudence van Siouxy en American Woman van the Butthole Surfers. In de meeste gevallen moest ik toegeven dat het orgineel zeker niet slechter was en toen ging voor mij de schatkist van popmuziek pas echt open. Ik heb dat helemaal niet als aanmatigend ervaren,maar als een unieke ervaring dat de muziek van het tijdsgewricht waarin je leeft niet perse zaligmakend is. Ik snap nu ook mijn vader beter, die tot op zijn sterfbed zweerde bij Bach. Zoals ik op mijn sterfbed naar alle waarschijnlijkheid bij de Beatles zal zweren.
En zoals ik zelf ooit ingewijd ben in muziek van voor mijn tijd, heb ik ook een aantal jongeren van 18 heel veel plezier gedaan met "Exiter" en ze vervolgens op sleeptouw genomen naar Depeche Mode in Ahoy: we waren allen verbluft en hebben ons dik in het zweet gedanst. Andersom wees Gijsbert Kamer mij met zijn lovende artikel naar het zelfde sportpaleis om daar vorig jaar Stevie Wonder te ondergaan. Nota bene:ik ben opgegroeid in de "I Just Called To Say I Love You" jaren.... Ik ben het uiteindelijk helemaal met hem eens geworden dat Wonder de meest relevante nog levende Afro Amerikaanse artiest is.
Hoewel over smaak te twisten valt ben ik nog steeds erg blij dat er af en toe iemand je aan de hand neemt en je liefdevol dwingt je smaak wat op te rekken, voorbij de waan van de dag te kijken en je vooroordelen wat af te breken. Zo zal ik nog eens proberen objectief naar MGMT luisteren.
Om eerlijk te zijn Marcel, ben ik ook geen diehard Dylan fan. Zag hem ooit in Ahoy, maar de ster van de van die avond was de man achter de geluidsknoppen. Nog nooit zo'n goed geluid bij een concert gehoord. Ook wat waard!
Maar even over het woord aanmatigend in je artikel. Zelf dank nog steeds een aantal vrienden op mijn blote knieen die mij in "mijn" jaren tachtig inwijdden in de muziek van voor die tijd. Die me lieten horen waar b.v. Sister Ray dat ik kende van Joy Division vandaan kwam, Dear Prudence van Siouxy en American Woman van the Butthole Surfers. In de meeste gevallen moest ik toegeven dat het orgineel zeker niet slechter was en toen ging voor mij de schatkist van popmuziek pas echt open. Ik heb dat helemaal niet als aanmatigend ervaren,maar als een unieke ervaring dat de muziek van het tijdsgewricht waarin je leeft niet perse zaligmakend is. Ik snap nu ook mijn vader beter, die tot op zijn sterfbed zweerde bij Bach. Zoals ik op mijn sterfbed naar alle waarschijnlijkheid bij de Beatles zal zweren.
En zoals ik zelf ooit ingewijd ben in muziek van voor mijn tijd, heb ik ook een aantal jongeren van 18 heel veel plezier gedaan met "Exiter" en ze vervolgens op sleeptouw genomen naar Depeche Mode in Ahoy: we waren allen verbluft en hebben ons dik in het zweet gedanst. Andersom wees Gijsbert Kamer mij met zijn lovende artikel naar het zelfde sportpaleis om daar vorig jaar Stevie Wonder te ondergaan. Nota bene:ik ben opgegroeid in de "I Just Called To Say I Love You" jaren.... Ik ben het uiteindelijk helemaal met hem eens geworden dat Wonder de meest relevante nog levende Afro Amerikaanse artiest is.

Als 61-jarige mag ik me gelukkig prijzen dat ik nu al 4 decennia
lang de prachtigste muziek hoor langskomen. In de sixties waren
dat Stones, Kinks, Love, Byrds, Moby Grape en Hendrix, het
grootste deel van de jaren zeventig gebeurde er voor mij, op een
paar uitzonderingen na (Led Zeppelin o.a) heel weinig bijzonders.
Punk en even later new wave kwamen precies op tijd. Sex Pistols,
Buzzcocks, Clash en wat later Only Ones, Bunnymen, maar ook Gun
Club, jonge, jonge wat was dat genieten. De jaren negentig, ja
dat waren vooral de Pixies. Mocht ik drie platen meenemen naar
een onbewoond eiland, dan zou dat iets van Hendrix, Pixies en
Arcade Fire worden. En dan krijgen we de jaren o. Funeral hoort
natuurlijk op nummer 1 te staan. Grijsgedraaid zouden we vroeger
in de tijd van het vinyl gezegd hebben. En verder? Vooral veel
van hetzelfde (Radiohead, Interpol, Coldplay, Elbow), een
kortstondige Britpop-explosie waarvan naderhand alleen het debuut
van Kaiser Chiefs en Arctic Monkeys zijn blijven hangen, twee
mooie Editors cd's, maar vooral ook singer/songwriters en
Americana-bands die de een na de andere pracht cd afleveren zoals
Ryan Adams, Calexico, Son Volt vooral en Wilco. Dit is muziek die
blijft hangen, die je over 10 jaar nog beluistert. Zoals de
onlangs verschenen cd van het Amerikaanse gezelschap Maldives dat
ook zal doen, Schitterend. Net zoals trouwens die aanstekelijke
folk van Mumford & Sons. Heerlijk.

Pfff, een top 10 uit de jaren 00. Voor mij is, zoals voor
anderen, het criteria of ze nog regelmatig gedraaid worden. Dan
valt er veel af (zeker als je te veel muziek hebt). Een top 10 is
dan al te veel. Na enig wikken en wegen kom ik tot een top 5,
waarvan er eigenlijk nog 2 buiten mededinging meedoen omdat er
een live cd bij staat en een soort best of, of hoe omschrijf je
een cd waarbij oude nummers in een nieuw jasje zijn
gestoken?

Jongens, wat heerlijk dat de chili peppers ondanks verontrustende
recensies in de laatste jaren nog niet zijn voorgekomen in alle
lijstjes van de jaren nul. Organischer dan Blood Sugar is het
nooit geworden, de korte opleving californication daargelaten,
waarvan akte.

Uncut is een blad voor de wat oudere muziekliefhebber en richt zich vooral op singer songwrtter, americana en de "betere" popmuziek. In hun lijst je staat ook heel veel moois en ook wel hips (Roots, Flaming Lips, SigurRos) dat er bij de hypelijst van OOR niet instaat. het getuigd in elk geval van meer smaak en oprechte liefde voor de muzikant en het vak songschrijver.

Er moet me verder nog iets van het hart: er zijn blijkbaar mensen die vinden dat bepaalde platen niet genoeg 'relevantie' hebben om in een lijst te mogen staan, maar volgens mij is het enige wat relevant moet zijn juist of je een plaat lekker vind en graag draait.
