(At the request of an American friend, I have tried to translate my Dutch rant for Dutch fellow-bloggers into English.
Latest Moh-toon update: 050206 12h12
As a result of all the fuss about those Danish cartoons, famous Dutch Cartoonists express reluctance at drawing Mohammed Cartoons (Moh-toons). Partly for fear of offending, partly for fear of putting oil on the fire.
I do believe this is a very dangerous way of thinking
If we got initimated and decided to refrain from making and publishing Moh-toons based on the reactions of some extremists with the right P.R.-connections, we would be guilty of trying to think for an extremely large and diverse group of people, based on the behaviour of an extremely small minority of madmen.
I had a Christian upbringing, but do not wish to be associated with American Pro-Life terrorists blowing up abortion clinics any more than I do with Intelligent Design fanatics fighting 150 years of evolution science.
Likewise, Mahmut, my butcher, has no wish to be associated with extremist suicide bombers. Let alone that he wants them to speak for him.
Furthermore, as a result of our decision to refrain from making Moh-toons, we immediately label every Muslim as intolerant. This is a catch-22 that even the most smoothly integrated Muslim will not be able to crack.
This way, each cartoonist expressing fear of coming up with a Moh-toon only serves as P.R. ammunition for right wing extremist groups, which are of course ‘shocked and outraged’.
Everybody: paint, draw, embroider and photoshop away and come up with as many cartoons as you can, and I am betting that most Muslim people just couldn’t care less.
My attempt at a Moh-toon (Jesus and Mohammed looking down on earth, wondering where things went wrong, while sharing a joint) so far only drew critcism from one Christian. She felt insulted for me implying that Jesus and Mohammed could be promoting the same basic religion. Haven’t heard one bad comment from one muslim reader!
Far be it from me to force any well-known cartoonist into becoming the first martyr for freedom of expression this year.
It would be much better,if scores of unknown cartoonist start drawing Moh-toons first, and hopefully the rest will follow.
One country can be boycotted, some artists can be threatened, but thousands of cartoonists in tens of thousands of newspapers and hundred thousands of blogs are immune to any threat.
The more the better.
These are some brave artists that have published a Moh-toon in the last days. At the bottom I included mine as well as an example of drive over talent. Who would miss an opportunity to share a page with these guys?!
Please let me know if you if you know of any others!

As a Christian you are not understanding the place of Holy
Prophet Muhammed in our minds. Number one. Making pictures of any
living being is highly prohibited in Islam, because on the
judgement day the God will ask the picture maker that you tried
to be ME, because only I can give life and no one else. So we are
prohibited to make pictures of any human being because we cannot
give life to that picture. Secondly the place of Holy Prophet
Muhammed. Not only He but the Jesus and Moses are holy to us as
well. We do not wish to see their cartoons as well. I am sorry to
say but this freedom of speech and freedom thing is making you
people day by day religion less. You people are socially
declining. Gay and lesbians marriages are allowed now on
government levels and soon marriages with animals like dogs,
horses and pigs will be allowed and such marriages will be
conducted in a church. Freedom has no limits. I dont know how
much freedom you require. After gays and lesbians and animal sex
i dont know what is next? Similarly after jesus and moses
cartoons and films now Holy Prophet Muhammed cartoons and films
next what? Where will your freedom thing will end? This freedom
thing will destroy your society. Remember everything going up has
to come down. Its a rule of physics applied to every matter of
the society. Its a matter of time that how much time is it going
to take to come back down. And you as a society are devastating.
Dont take me as an extremist. Its my society's view about Europe
and America. Please think about it, about yourself. Everyone
including us have to go up and then go down (socially, morally,
politically, technologically) but we can slow down the pace.

I agree with you that on many levels our society is backsliding
with regards to moral and social values. However I feel that that
is not so much the effect of our Freedom of Speech but much more
the effect of an unbridled capitalism.
And I believe that free speech will also help us regain those values again, one day. Free speech is not necesarry to make jokes about prophets but it is necesarry to keep checks and balances on all organizations governing our lives. Restricting free speech has never in history helped a society gain it's full potential. On the contrary, it is often the hallmark sign of bad government.
I respect your belief that you will be held accountable by God if you would dare to draw a living thing, let alone Jesus or Mohammed. I will never force you to make a cartoon against your will or belief.
However, I also expect you to respect my belief that the God I will be judged by really couldn't be concerned less about my drawings in that respect.
And if I feel that a cartoon of both Jesus and Mohammed will a) confront many christians that are now on their high horse of freedom with their own feelings when seeing an image of Jesus that they didn't expect. b) convey my belief that the big differences between our religions are based on misinterpretations, mistakes and mishaps.
I will defend my freedom to convey these ideas any way I wish to. But I will also fight for your freedom to never be forced to draw them yourself.
I should feel free to write what I want. You should be free to read what you want.

Khurram Khan,
Human history has shown that economies and societies can grow more-or-less indefinitely. I say more-or-less because the universe will eventually experience energy death, but that's a long way off yet.
Over the long term, we seem to advance more than we are set back. Now, I can see how someone from a society that has been in more-or-less constant decline for 400 years might disagree with that. However, if you are expecting the west to decline, I suggest you not hold your breath.
Personally, I disagree with gay marriage. However, it will not lead to bestiality like you claim. And while I disagree with gay marriage, I find sexual intercourse with a nine year old vile and disgusting and immoral even within the institution of marriage. I conclude the west has a long way to fall morally before we ever reach the depths of Islam.
I agree you are not an extremist as far as muslims go, and that is the whole problem. While your views are relatively moderate for a muslim, your views are inherently illiberal and incompatible with modern civil society. You have no place among among men of higher morals.

@Mohammed: I find it hard to belive that a real adn deeply
religious Muslim could never write the words Lord God without
capitals, like you just did.
So, are you just a teriffied little boy playing with fire, or is there something that you personally stand to gain by widening this gap?

Many Christians who do not agree with 'American Pro-Life
terrorists blowing up abortion clinics' are still very much
against legalization of abortion.
Likewise, many Muslims, whether butchers or otherwise employed, have no wish to be associated with extremist suicide bombers, but are insulted and outraged by the cartoons. And probably rightfully so. Instead of more cartoons, we should call for our Muslim brothers and sisters to explain it to us why they are so mad and I would be all ears. Listen and learn!

Momo, until your god will have his/her day (to be politically
correct) we will live ours, OK? If you are that convinced of your
version then be happy, even smug, in the knowledge that when that
day comes you might be right. In your opinion :) Until I'm proven
wrong I'll enjoy this life. And the next.
